Erasmus Welcome Days

2020-02-03

At the start of every semester, The Erasmus Student Network in Pecs organizes Welcome Days for new students, filled with social activities to get to know the city, the people, the pubs and all the other entertainment places.

Students come and go every year and semester, but the most beautiful part about new students is the opportunity to make new lifelong friendships. As the new semester opens, so does all the fun that comes with it. The city will spring back to life, and everyone else comes back to continue their studies.

This semester the ESN are organizing more than just a week of activities, but a whole nine days starting from Sunday the 2nd of February until the 10th.

The fun begins with a city adventure, where students will be divided into groups, each with a leader, to explore and introduce our beautiful city Pecs to the new students. There will also be games to play along the way to keep up the hype and get the chance to mingle with everyone. The event starts at 14 o’clock and the rendezvous is at the famous horse statue in the city center.

On the next day, there will be a pub quiz where your brains will be tested with general knowledge and interesting genres. It’s a friendly competition to put your minds together, have fun and get to know each other while having a drink or two.

If you’re a polyglot or you’re interested in cultures and languages, The Language Tandem on Tuesday is the place to go.

Different nationalities are gathering to talk and teach each other words and basics from their language. (Don’t get too carried away with curse words though, you don’t want to end up offending someone.)

Next up is perhaps everyone’s favorite part of the welcoming days, the Pub Crawl. There’s no better way to start a new semester than hitting up the best bars in town and enjoying the alcoholic beverages they have to offer, and don’t forget to try some pálinka, Hungary’s alcoholic specialty which also comes in different flavors, so try them all, it’s worth it!

The pub crawl is personally one of my favorite events, all the students from the city join in and walk together from pub to pub, playing games and sparking friendships that will light up your whole experience in the city.

The meeting point is at the yellow tram at 19:00 and from there groups will be made, each set visits different pubs and then everyone gathers in one bar and head to party at a club.

“Beer before wine and you'll feel fine; wine before beer and you'll feel queer” as the age-old aphorism goes. However, chances are that you will still end up with a hangover the next day.

On Thursday, you and your group of friends can sign up for Laser Tag and compete against other teams in Laser corner. It’s a laser shooting game that feels like playing Counter-strike in real life. It’s another personal recommendation to participate. Bring out your gaming spirits because the adrenaline rush is to die for.

At the beginning of every semester, the first Friday is reserved for a party at Pecsi Est Café. The Opening Semester Party is one of the most anticipated parties that ESN and TRIPOD Pecs put together with some of the best DJ’s and all the music you can enjoy.

As for the weekend, the ice rink in Pecs is waiting for you to skate on. The event starts Saturday evening at 17:00 to 20:00. On Sunday, there’s a visit to the animal shelter where you will get the chance to walk dogs around with everyone for an hour. Bring warm blankets for the dog you’re walking if you can, it might be breezy.

You’re in for a treat on Monday the 10th. There’s no better closure to these welcoming days than a visit to the saunas in Szigetvár Spa. You can kick back, relax and enjoy the Hungarian thermal bath culture.

Let go of the toxins and start the second week fresh and ready.

More details and timings of the events can be found on the ESN Welcome Days event on Facebook. Events such as the thermal bath and the laser tag may need registering, keep an eye out for more details on the event page. Have a great semester!
